Helena at a Glance
The city of Helena was founded in 1864, following the discovery of gold along
the banks of a nearby stream. From that point onwards, gold was a major industry
in Helena and has shaped much of its vibrant history. Helena is Montana’s state
capital, the host of a variety of cultural events and the home of many historic
landmarks. The St.
Helena Cathedral is a popular attraction that was built at the turn of the
20th century and is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Every July Helena is
alive with the Last
Chance Stampede and Fair, which includes a rodeo, carnival and livestock exhibition.
Helena’s downtown area offers shopping on the historic Last
Chance Gulch, where visitors enjoy a walking mall, specialty shops and preserved
architecture. For those who enjoy the outdoors, Helena makes an excellent base
for visiting the recreational areas around the city.
